Redpine

Check the user's current Redpine Connect balance and trial status. Returns: balance, trial_active, trial_remaining, trial_total, dashboard_url, and purchase_url. The dashboard is where users purchase credits, view usage, and manage billing. Free — calling this never deducts credits.

get_balance

List all document collections accessible with your API key. Returns each collection's name, display name, description, and your organisation's price per 1k tokens.

list_collections

Preview a search before committing to a charge. Runs the search and returns a truncated teaser plus the cost to unlock the full results via `confirm`. Free of charge. The response includes a `workflow` field: `"requires_confirm"` means the full data stays locked until `confirm` runs; `"complete"` means the search is free and the full data is already included, leaving nothing for `confirm` to do. The teaser contains citation metadata (title, publisher, journal, publication date, identifiers) plus a short, word-capped snippet per chunk -- shorter still for short chunks, never the full text -- so the user can decide which results to unlock. Each row carries a `relevance` score; read it per the server instructions before offering anything for purchase. A result that has figures carries a `figure_count`. The images themselves are never part of a `requires_confirm` preview: `confirm` delivers them free with the text when called with `include_figures`, and a `complete` preview returns them with `include_figures` alongside its full data. It returns a `queryId` that stays unlockable for 7 days; you can confirm it more than once to unlock further results, paying only for the ones you have not already unlocked. Search only ('search', or a 'search-{collection}' tool): every other tool is called directly by name, returns its full result, and bills once with no preview/confirm step.

preview

Record that the user wants a journal or publisher Redpine does not currently cover. It applies once the user has named a specific journal or publisher, a search for it returned no results, and the user asked for the request to be logged. Free; never deducts credits. If the journal is in fact covered, the response says so and gives the ISSN to filter on instead.

request_journal

Search a document collection using hybrid semantic + keyword retrieval. Returns ranked text chunks as JSON rows with source metadata (title, authors, identifiers), a `relevance` score per row (how to read it: see the server instructions), and what the search cost. Calling it bills immediately; run 'preview' first to see snippets and the exact cost. Collection names come from list_collections. Specific, detailed queries work better than short keywords. Use the optional 'filters' field to restrict results by journal, publisher, publication date, or other indexed metadata fields.

search

Unlock the full results of a prior search `preview`. Bills the user's Redpine balance at the configured price — only call it after the user has explicitly approved that exact amount. Pass the `queryId` from the preview. The optional `result_ids` argument unlocks only those specific results (the user pays only for what they select); omit it to unlock all previewed results. A preview lasts 7 days and can be confirmed repeatedly — you are charged only for results not already unlocked, so a confirm that failed (a balance shortfall, a transient error) can simply be retried with the same `queryId`. Returns cost_charged and balance_remaining so you can report both without a separate get_balance call. The response opens with a `receipt`: `receipt.unlocked` names what THIS call unlocked (id, title, doi) and `receipt.cost_charged` is what it charged for them, so a repeat confirm of ids you already own comes back with an empty `receipt.unlocked` and `cost_charged` 0. `unlocked_count` is cumulative for the `queryId`, and `results` follows last with every row of the preview, each with the same `relevance` score the preview showed. Pass `include_figures` to receive figure images along with the text — they cost nothing extra, and they come back for every result unlocked under this `queryId`, so a repeat confirm with the flag fetches images you skipped without charging again.

Search Redpine Science (1 source). Sources: Open Access Journals — Open-access research across all disciplines, excluding preprint servers: 14.1M full-text documents, biomedicine leading. Billed per search at $1.00 per 1k delivered tokens. Calling it directly runs the search and bills immediately. To see snippets and the exact cost first, run the 'preview' tool (tool_name: 'search-redpine-science'), then 'confirm' to unlock. Use the optional 'filters' field to restrict results by journal, publisher, publication date, or other indexed metadata fields.
