ICD-10 Codes

Get the hierarchy of codes under a category. Returns the category header and up to `limit` child codes (default 500, max 2000) ordered by code; broad prefixes (e.g. a single-letter chapter) may be truncated. Use this to explore related codes within a disease category or code family.

get_hierarchy

Get diagnosis codes by ICD-10-CM chapter or category. Use chapter (single letter) for broad categories or category (3 characters) for specific disease groups. Useful for exploring codes within a clinical area.

get_by_category

Get ICD-10-PCS procedure codes for a specific body system, optionally filtered by section. Body system is identified by the second character of the code for most sections (fourth character for Section F). Example: '0' for Central Nervous System (Section 0), '0' for Neurological System (Section F). Useful for finding all procedures related to an anatomical system.

get_by_body_system

Look up a specific ICD-10 code by its code number. Returns full details including descriptions, HIPAA transaction validity status, and the fiscal years the code has appeared in (FY2026 code set; history tracked from FY2020 for diagnosis, FY2021 for procedure). Pass as_of with the encounter's date of service to check the code was in effect on that date — ICD-10 sets change every October 1. Codes retired from the current set still resolve, marked with the year they were retired.

lookup_code

Validate an ICD-10 code to check if it exists and is valid for HIPAA-covered transactions. Pass as_of with the encounter's date of service to also check the code was in effect on that date — ICD-10 sets change every October 1, and a code from the wrong fiscal year is not billable (current set: FY2026). Codes retired from the current set are reported as retired, with the years they were in effect.
